CY-IWANDER turns two this month!
As someone who's never loved writing, who studied economics and wrote briefing notes for a living, and who didn't know the first thing about making a website, this blog has really challenged me.
I was never the type to keep a journal (although I have tried on a half a dozen occasions) - In over ten years of travel, I never successfully documented a single trip. Potential 'over-sharing' was also something I struggled with. With social media, over-used 'selfies' and 'too much information' (I'm sure you know what I mean), it's hard to know what strikes a good balance. Who wants to hear about the problem I had with fleas in Xela. That I slept with wool socks and tied my clothes in garbage bags for 3 months? Or that I fell off a motorcycle on the way to a market and slid across the highway at 70 km/hour. One moment, I was enjoying the view, and the next, I was sliding across the pavement on my back. As a side note, it was truly amazing the number of people that came running out to help us within minutes!
So here I am two years later. I'm in Ottawa and back with the federal government (on contract). In many ways, things feel very much the same, but I know they aren't quite.
CY-IWANDER started as a travel blog, but I would like it to continue, as a place where I write on Cuban culture and dance (including the annual dance course, Bailando Cuba), as a snapshot of local wanderings, and as my photography site.
On this anniversary month, I want to say THANK YOU. Thank you for your readership and support - truly, it means a lot.
As someone who is an extravert but also a bit quiet on other fronts, I'm working hard to shape up my content and write from a more authentic place. I commit to posting every Sunday late afternoon/early evening for a year. (gasp!) I hope you can find a few minutes in your week to check out what's new on CY-IWANDER.
If you are enjoying this content, I would be thrilled if you could share or follow my Facebook page. I'm also on twitter if we're not yet connected.
PS - If you are in town this coming Saturday afternoon and still have some Holiday shopping to do; I will have a table at the HUB Ottawa Holiday Market (71 Bank Street, 6th floor). I'll have a range of prints primarily from Canada, Cuba, Mexico, and some other goodies. The market runs from 10 AM - 3 PM. Entrance is free and there will be a great range of artists. Come by and say hi.
If you reference this post and like the CY-IWANDER page on Facebook, I'll have a special gift for you!
Thanks!
Caroline
